New to the game? Start here.

American Mahjong looks complicated from across the room, but it clicks fast with a patient teacher. Our classes are small, social and hands-on, so you're playing real games by the end of the first session.

Beginner Series: Learn to Play
A light lunch, then the tiles, the card, the Charleston and Jokers, finishing with a real beginner game. $25 per person.

Bring your card
Tiles are set up and ready. Bring your own NMJL playing card, or order a personalized card with a plastic cover from us ($15) at least 48 hours before class.

Private & Group Lessons
Bring your friends, neighbors or club. We come to you anywhere in Hampton Roads.

Say hello to Miss Pearl

Miss Pearl is our resident flamingo and the unofficial queen of the table. She loves a sunny porch, a pink drink, a good Charleston and anyone brave enough to call “Mahjong.”

Coastal Virginia Mahjong started with a simple idea: this game is more fun with more friends. We teach newcomers, gather regulars and keep things relaxed, welcoming and a little bit fabulous, right here on the coast.

Questions

I've never played. Can I come to open play?

We recommend the Beginner Series first so you'll feel comfortable at the table. If you've played a little, open play is a great way to practice.

What do I need to bring?

Game tiles will be set up and ready for you. Please bring your own current National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) playing card, or order a personalized playing card with a plastic cover from us for $15. Personalized cards must be ordered at least 48 hours before your class or open play.

How do I pay?

Choose a date, fill in your details and you'll go to a secure Square checkout to pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You'll get a receipt by email, and we'll send the location and details before your game.

What if I need to cancel?

Cancel 48 hours or more ahead for a full refund or credit toward another date. Inside 48 hours we're happy to transfer your spot to a friend.

Can you teach our club or a private party?

Yes. We teach private and group lessons across Hampton Roads, at your home, clubhouse or community center. Reach out and we'll put together a plan.
